Lexington is a town in Rowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in Rowan County and the second most populous municipality in North Carolina after Charlotte. Lexington is located on the border of South Rowan and Moore counties. The first mention of Lexington was in 1765 when Colonel John Sevier's forces fought against a Cherokee Indian village on the site of present-day downtown Lexington. In 1775, General James Johnston's army descended upon Lexington to plunder it during his march from Virginia to support America's independence from Great Britain. The city grew rapidly following its incorporation as a town on November 3, 1853. As textile mills became operational throughout western North Carolina during the 19th century, Lexington emerged as one of America's leading textile cities. By 1900, over 50% of all cotton sales in eastern North Carolina were conducted through Lexington channels such as stores and warehouses along Bolton Street between Fifth and Ninth Streets NW (now Meeting Place NE). In 1906 Mayor John Witherspoon organized Durham–Lexington Speedway which became one of NASCAR's earliest events with races taking place at nearby Garner Field until it closed due to lack of funding in 1909. The track reopened under new management two years later but closed again in 1911 due to race conflicts with other tracks across eastern NC including Winston-Salem Speedway which became NASCAR's premier oval race track by that point. During World War II much activity took place within downtown Lexington where war factories were built such as BAE Systems' Lewis Air Force Base plant adjacent to Sixth Street NW; RCA Laboratories near Eighth Street NW; Textile Workers Memorial Museum just east of Fourth Street NW; US Army Ammunition Plant across Wilson Boulevard from First Baptist Church SE; Naval Weapons Station Kings Bay SW along Wilson Boulevard SE also housing an air defense radar station operated by US Coast Guard for military purposes off Kingstown Road NE; and many other smaller facilities not listed here because they are not associated with any particular industry or war effort specifically but which nonetheless had an impact on local communities nearby like Washingtonboro Heights adjacent to Third Street NE and numerous small businesses surrounding factories erected there such as Jardine & Mathews clothing company who produced uniforms for American soldiers during World War II In recent decades there has been significant redevelopment taking place throughout DowntownLexington spearheaded by Mayor Jim Gray who has made it his priority project to revitalize this historic district while also creating new job opportunities for residents while preserving important historical properties
