The city annexed adjoining farms beginning in 1861 as part of efforts to maintain control over land usage within its boundaries byFighting off numerous challenges from neighboring towns that had grown up around them since they were founded - most notably Pender and Wilmington - Lewisville quickly became model city after becoming one of the most prosperous communities in North Carolina during its early years. Despite this success, much like many American towns during Reconstruction following the Civil War (1861-1865), race issues came into focus as white farmers began purchasing large amounts of African Americans living within their borders. This led eventually to integration through political pressure while maintaining separate voting rights for whites and blacks
