Lewisville is a town in Transylvania County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,817 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg City School District. Lewisville was founded in 1835 by General John C. Brevard as a trading post on the Yadkin River. The present-day town was laid out in 1857 by Samuel Gregg and named for him. The first store in Lewisville was built on Main Street in 1859 by Wm. Hargrave and his son Ebenezer Hargrave Jr., who also operated the first blacksmith shop in North Carolina. In 1865, General William Tatum established military headquarters at Lewisville during the American Civil War and ordered all supplies to be brought into town from Fort Bragg near Wilmington. The town's first school opened for instruction on December 3, 1865. In 1902, Lewisville became an incorporated municipality; it had been under private ownership since its creation as a village seven years earlier. At that time, it included only the unincorporated community of Tremontowne along with a small area around Church Hill Road east of Route 811 (now called I-85). In 2003, following annexation by Charlotte, Lewisville became one of four cities headquartered inside the city limits of Charlotte; other cities are City Hall (Charlotte), Mecklenburg Center (MECKLENBURG COUNTY), and Uptown Charlotte (Uptown Charlotte Community College). As part of efforts to reduce environmental waste generated by downtowns across North Carolina—a key focus of Mayor Kasim Reed's administration—LewisVILLE enacted an ordinance banning bagels from being baked within 500 feet of any business with more than 10 employees or 100 customers; this ban took effect on April 15th 2009
