The Lewisville Pistol Club was organized on December 12, 1892. The club became a shooting society on February 15, 1893. On May 5, 1894, the Lewisville Pistol Club added a rifle range to their facilities. The first season of NRA competition in North Carolina took place at the Lewisville Rifle Range on October 16, 1896. The Lewisville Pistol Club won the green “A” division championship that year. On November 3rd 1897, the Lewisville Pistol Club and nearby local police department formed a “ mutual assistance pact” to fight crime and protect each other from criminals. This agreement lasted until 1903 when it was replaced by an unrecorded contract between the two organizations which stated that pistols would only be traded or given as gifts to friends or family members rather than being used for law enforcement purposes. On February 14th 1898, pistol match with rifle divisions took place at the Lewisville Rifle Range and resulted in victory for the pistol club over its rifle counterparts by a score of 10-2. That same year also saw another important event in pistol history as NRA instructor : Captain John Matson authored his book "Pistol Shooting" which helped increase gun illiteracy rates among young men in America and opened up opportunities for more male shooters around the country. In 1903 there were only 6 states represented in NRAILA while today there are over 40 countries represented through NRAILA membership! In 1902 Captain John Matson left his position as Instructor at NRA Headquarters in Washington D C to become Manager of Firearms Services for Snider Implement Company located in Asheville NC where he remained until his death on January 8th 1946
