Lewisville is a town in Cherokee County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 903 at the 2010 census. Lewisville is located on the southern edge of the Piedmont region and is bordered by Gadsden to the north, Gastonia to the east, and Rockingham to the south. The town's name comes from Brigadier General Edmund Lewis woods who fought in the American Revolution. The first European settlers in what would become Lewisville were Scottish Presbyterians who came overland from Scotland in 1814. By 1840 they had built a cabin on a bluff overlooking Goat Creek and named their settlement after General James B. Lewis who had led an unsuccessful effort to retake Savannah, Georgia during the American Civil War as part of Grant's army. A post office called "Brigadier General Edmunds" was established in 1842, but it was discontinued due to circuitous routing around downtown Chattanooga. In 1852 Union troops burned down two white homesteads near present-day Lewisville while retreating from a Confederate attack at Knoxville; this event helped start what would be known as "The Negro Rebellion." In 1865 local slaves rebelled against their owners when they learned that an order from president Abraham Lincoln ordering all blacks not to engage in any insurrectionary activity had been rescinded just days earlier. This event also helped spur development of nearby Fort Fisher which eventually became one of America's most important military installations during World War II. In 1898, following annexation by Texas of adjacent Cherokee County, residents of what would become Lewisville voted overwhelmingly (93% to 7%) for annexation into Texas as well; this move provided new opportunities for trade with Oklahoma City and other regional Mexican cities and made possible much growth in community services since then including such things as fire protection and public works programs throughout its years as a city limits developing town/village communities across rural counties northeast thereof until its incorporation into Cherokee County as one entity effective July 1st 2009 pursuant to NCS § 21-1-101 et seq.; however certain aspects including zoning controls remain with local government control notwithstanding federal requirements under NCS § 21-1-201 et seq., see www.lewisvilletxansocietywww2a98). A post office called "Lewisville" was established here on October 12th 1870, but it closed due to lack of mail volume three weeks later! On October 15th 1870 Samuel Dillard opened up his store at 309 Elm Street which served both locals & visitors until 1907 when he sold his store & moved away leaving behind his namesake grocery store building still standing today @ 311 Elm Street which served locals only until 1965 when it became home again (& serving tourists still)to local farmers markets thruout its history! From 1975 thru 1990 it functioned briefly (weekends only)as Visitor Center for Meredith College before finally closing again w/o fanfare on December 14th 1990 due to poor attendance & increasing competition from other tourist attractions within CherokeeCounty nowadays! On January 17th 1889 Isaac Newton opened up his general store at 421 Main Street which continues operation today @ 501 Main Street - becoming one of very few stores open late into night long past midnight currently! Isaac Newton actually started out life working 2 day stints per week starting at 10am Monday morning moving clockwise around countertop stocking items needed for daily living such as flourishes sugar etc...working 3 hours each day 8pm Friday night then taking 4 hours off Saturday morning ending up working all day Sunday afternoon making ends meet doing exactly what he wanted without having anything extra set aside just like anyone else!! It wasn't long before people began traveling herefrom surrounding towns so he decided maybe buying some groceries wouldn't be such a bad idea after all? Afterall if you can't buy something here locally you might as well buy some Distance too?! Also note that even though current ownership has owned & operated our business continuously longest anywhere from 1935 thru 2013 (& will continue doing so through 2024!) no complaints received regarding high quality product or great service ever!!!
