In 1842, the C&O Railroad was built through Lewisville and soon after many businesses sprung up around it such as grocery stores, cotton mills, hotels and other services which continue into this day. In 1865 when General Jubal Early invaded North Carolina during the American Civil War he burned down many homes in LewisVILLE because he believed they were supporting Confederate forces. During World War II manyLewisvillians joined patriotic organizations like WACS (Women Airforce Service Pilots) or served in military units such as Navy Seals or Marines; some even went overseas! Today most of these veterans live in nearby Rocky Mount where they continue their service through local community service programs or army Veteran Organizations such as Alpha Company 9th Infantry Regiment K9 Soldier Support Battalion
