By 1870, most of those living in Lewisville were white settlers from nearby Charlotte. The first store in Lewisville was built on Main Street in 1872 by Capt A W Clifton. In 1882, John Fenton opened a grocery store on Elm Street near where today's library stands. In 1907, James Ligon bought a farm at Pulaski Road and changed its name to Lewisville Farms because he wanted it to bear his family's name forever. During World War II, Lewisville was one of several towns located within 60 miles of Raleigh that was requisitioned for military service (along with other communities such as Durham and Chapel Hill). Most residents supported their local governments during the war; however, some did leave for lack of food or shelter after battles occurred around them. Afterward, many people settled back into life in Lewisville while others moved away again over time. Today,Lewisville is an active community with a variety of businesses and cultural events happening every month or so throughout downtown areas like Main Street square and Central Square
