Lewisville is a town in Duplin County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area. Lewisville is one of two towns in Duplin County that are both located on the Cumberland Plateau and have an elevation of over 6,000 feet (1,800 m). The othertown is Pender. The first settler in Lewisville was James Gentry who moved from Virginia in 1790 to settle near what would become Lewisville. He built a cabin on what would become Gentry Street and named it after his father-in-law, Colonel John Lewisohn. In 1800, Captain Samuel Ashe bought land east of Gentry Street and called it Ashe's Mill which he used for grinding flour for local merchants. By 1810 there were 10 settlers living around Ashe's Mill and by 1830 there were 30 or so. By 1840 there were 140 people living in Lewisville with 5 mills producing flour, cloths and tanning hides. By 1850 those numbers had increased to 300 with 7 mills producing flour, cloths and tanning hides; but by 1870 they had decreased to 60 with only 2 mills still operating due to competition from larger markets outside of North Carolina. In 1871 William Henson purchased some surrounding land which became known as "Henson Land". He established Henson & Company grocery store (now defunct) on present day Highway 158 and began market gardening which soon led him to develop a successful cotton farm including a small millinery business making fabric pieces such as aprons out of cotton twill thread imported from England during the late 19th century; these days most people know about Henson Land because their ancestors started this very profitable family enterprise more than 150 years ago! Today much of the acreage remains idle except for occasional use as nature provides water troughs for deer hunting on nearby upland hillsides while also providing limited agricultural opportunity when precipitation falls short; however some farmers continue modest production through selective planting using innovative irrigation systems utilizing many gravity fed wells dug into olderuvial soils brought down by retreating glaciers over millions of years! On July 8th he discovered what he thought was a Sioux village but upon closer inspection realized that it was actually a buffalo camp! He ordered his men to fire on the unsuspecting tribe and five hundred warriors were killed or scalped. This event became known as Custer's Massacre. A year later Captain James Lewis met General Ulysses S Grant while visiting Fort Hays on horseback. Grant told Lewis about this massacre and offered him permission to start a settlement near Fort Hays if he could find enough land available. With this new opportunity came some great challenges for Lewisville: firstly because of Grant's orders not to allow civilians within two miles of any fort; secondly because there were no roads in those days so transportation was essential; finally because most people in those days were farmers who didn't have access to boats or horses so they had to ride their animals back and forth betweenFortHaysandLewisville everyday!
