In 1865, during the American Civil War, General George Custer's troop carrier Sherman crossed the river at Lewisville and stopped just short of town. The men from Sherman's regiment disembarked and took position on high ground overlooking the river below. From here they could see Confederate troops retreating upstream while their own unit fought off Confederate forces positions flank by flank until they reached safety behind Union lines. The town has experienced many changes over its history including being known as "the Birthplace of Baptist Christianity" because much of its population converted to that faith during the early 1800s; being a center for heavy industry during World War II; and becoming more rural since the turn of the century. Today, Lewisville remains a small but vibrant community with a rich history that can be enjoyed by all who visit it.
