The Lenoir Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1889. The club’s first purpose was to provide shooting opportunities for members of the community. In 1912, the club became a “safe haven” for fugitives from justice. Today, Lenoir is home to one of the most popular rifle ranges in North Carolina, as well as a number of pistol ranges. Lenoir is a town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,543 at the 2010 census. The Lenoir-Chatham Regional Airport is located in the town. Lenoir was founded on April 12, 1825 by Colonel John C. Lenoir and his wife Anna Maria Chatham as a plantation named Westmoreland Plantation. The land around present-day Lenoir was acquired from Lord Baltimore in 1792 and sold to General James Johnston for $10,000 cash and 2 million acres of land (later renamed Johnston County). In 1814 Johnston sold the remaining land to Colonel John C. Lenoir for $30,000 more money and 1/2 million acres of land (later renamed Randolph County). In 1828, Colonel John C. Lenoir donated 525 acres (approximately ) of what is now Lenoir County to the Presbyterian Church in America for use as a church farm or graveyard. This donation became known as "Lenoir Hill". Reverend Drury erected an Episcopal parish hall there in 1831 which quickly became the most popular religious building in town and one of the first brick churches in America. In 1860 Rev. Drury transferred ownership of the parish hall back to the Presbyterian Church in America which used it until it burned down on July 5th, 1865; this event is also noted as being one of only two fires that destroyed entire blocks of buildings downtown during Reconstruction Era America. Prior to these events much downtown business took place over open fires which made it difficult for reconstruction efforts to get started because manygomentally people were afraid that their homes would be next! Lenoir had its start as a slaveholding community with over 100 slaves when it was established by Colonel John C."Lenior" Chatham on April 12th1825 along with his wife AnnaMaria Chatham who served as his maidservant(s) while he built Westmoreland Plantation near present day Lenourght Creek up from some undeveloped lands grant from Lord Baltimore days earlier! Apostle Andrew Johnson visited both plantations briefly during March 1865 – about three weeks prior to Confederate President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation becoming effective January 1st 1865 – although no slave auctions were held here between then & later that year due abolitionist Northern sympathies fading & fear that such public displays might incite violence against black Americans living under Southern rule[1]. After Union forces captured all but 4 out of 11 counties withinAndrew Johnson's Tennessee Valley Campaign he ordered all freedmen west of Memphis must leave TN early February 1865 & march north into Union Territory; this did not apply sugar cane farmers east OF Knoxville who continued growing crops despite offers by Confederate Gov't leaders Rebuilding should have been focused on getting them off their property but instead several small towns across TN turned into ghost towns while others such as lenourght Creek grew rapidly becoming one of largest cotton plantations withinUnion territory!Following Union victory at Appomattox Court House General Sherman ordered all slaves remaining southof Memphis free& transported them home including many eastern sugar cane farmers who continued growing crops even after offers by Confederate Gov't leaders [2] . By 1870 however almost 400 years after African American slavery began here nearly all men owned no slaves except those lyingutenants few hundred white non-slaveholders owning anywhere from 3% to less than 1% real estate holdings statewide!! Most families still farming lands today though crime rates have climbed dramatically since prohibition ended over 90 years ago
