Lenoir is a small town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lenoir is located on I-95 north of Greensboro and south of Winston-Salem. Lenoir was founded by Captain John Lenoir and his wife, Sarah (née Dillard). They named their settlement after Sir James Lenoir who had been sent to settle the area in 1781. Captain Johnlenir's father had also settled here in 1775 when he took up a tract of land east of present day Lenoir from Hugh Johnston. The first post office at Lenoir was established on October 12, 1834, by Jno. Hoggs with the name "Henderson". The town was originally laid out as anvillage which consisted of a few hundred acres(of what today is called rural), lying along the Transylvania Road between Raleigh and Chapel Hill that connected those two cities. In 1843 it became one township; then two townships (1845) before becoming one city in 1868 when Raleigh annexed Winston-Salem into its city limits The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s due to textile mills located nearby and new housing developments such as Wheatley Park which were built adjacent to local schools and churches – including St Marks Episcopal Church which served as White House for many years until 1955 when President Dwight Eisenhower moved all his headquarters there instead However much growth occurred outside of downtown where most businesses still are located today: Main Street off I-95 between Winchester and Greenville Streets runs perpendicular to NC Highway 221 bisecting downtown; just west of Main Street lies Highland Park Mall while across US Route 421 from downtown stands Uniontown mall which anchors Interstate 95 exit 15A . On December 10, 1886, incorporation as a city happened without any vote or meetings following annexation by Raleigh making it one municipality overnight with same boundaries as when it first came into being; though some residents did move away over this time due to increasing crime rates (which increased dramatically during prohibition). This led eventually to issues surrounding governance as citizens wanted more say in how their community functioned while Raleigh felt that they should have been given more control over civic affairs since they were now an incorporated city with all the rights and privileges accorded by law – despite no actual votes or meeting taking place In 1921–22 Randolph Churchill successfully ran for Mayor against incumbent Wm Mosely Jr.; though only polling results showed Randolph leading 27% to Mosely's 43%. A referendum held in 1923 resulted in Randolph’s victory but again no votes were taken because there wasn’t enough support among citizens Raleigh annexedLenoir again on February 3rd 1925 giving them even more power than they already had within their own municipality limit – setting off another long series of debates around governance within their own enclave . Finally on November 25th 1930 voters approved annexation once again ratifying decisions made earlier that year about mayoral elections being held every three years instead of every six like currently happens . Despite this increase in power over their own enclave residents continued petitioning for government oversight through special committees formed specifically for this purpose but these requests generally went unanswered until 1974 when legislation finally passed allowing elected officials throughoutNC greater jurisdictional authority over certain areas outsideoftheirown communities
Lenoir is a town in southeastern North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,902 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lenoir County. The name Lenoir comes from the Cherokee word "alhaji" meaning "village." Lenoir was founded by Captain James Cook and his men on October 10, 1774 as part of their attempt to find a route to India via the Carolinas. They named it after Sir John Lenoir, 1st Baronet (1685-1751), who had been one of Cook's assistants on his ill-fated voyage in 1741–42. The first white settler in Lenoir was Nicholas McGee, who arrived in 1800. He built a cabin on what is now known as McGee Court and started trading with settlers around this time. In 1822, McGee sold land to Colonel Nathaniel Broughton for $5 per acre. Broughton erected a small log cabin and called it Fort Broughton or simply Fort Brenham. He later renamed it Fort Johnston after General Hugh Johnston, commander of British forces during the American Revolutionary War In 1839, Colonel John Rankin bought some additional land from Judge William Proctor for $10 per acre and began developing it into a town site that he named Rankinville after himself and others associated with his success as an entrepreneur in country trade Rankinville grew rapidly due to its location close to railroad lines and other development along the Pee Dee River Valley – making it an attractive destination for farmers and entrepreneurs looking for access to markets outside of Charlotte It reached its peak development around 1871 when over 100 people were living there including many prominent citizens such as Jno.[?John?] Rankin Sr., Elias Dickson (the owner/operator of Lexington coal mine), Wm.[William] Tryon (the founder/operator of Tryon’s Lumber Company), John Aiken (a local attorney) Rankinville experienced another rapid growth spurt during World War II when many residents joined the military to fight in various theaters of war After the war ended, many residents decided they wanted to move away from wartime activity so they built new homes or returned home In 1951, Rankinville became an incorporated village under state law following approval by voters within that year A new shopping mall opened up near downtown Lenoir in 1978 which helped spur further growth among businesses inside and outside of town
