Lenoir is a small town in Lenoir County, North Carolina. It was founded in 1853 by General John C. Caldwell and has been growing ever since. The Lenoir name comes from an Englishman who settled there in 1788, and named it for Lewis Lenoir, his brother-in-law's son who had immigrated to North Carolina from Scotland two years earlier. At first, they were traders and farmers before becoming colonists and developing heavy industry including shipbuilding and tobacco farming early on in their history. One of Lenoir's most famous citizens was Revolutionary War General John Forbes who fought at Yorktown and Battle of Camden where he received his nickname "The Intrepid" due to his numerous engagements during the war while also being one of the few British officers not killed or captured during hostilities in America. In 1871, when much of central NC became part of newly formed South Carolina, Lenoir remained separate as a borough within Greensboro COUNTY until 1924 when it joined with Winston County to form Winston Salem County which remains its current boundaries today (though parts have since been annexed into other jurisdictions). As ruralashevillians came into contact with more urban areas through transportation improvements such as interurban railways, growth began to suburbanize much portions of western Winston County particularly around Salisbury/Lenoir which saw rapid population growth beginning in the late 19th century leading eventually to annexation by Raleigh & Durham municipalities as well as other new townships throughout eastern Wake County starting around 1930s CE; this led ultimately to consolidation into Raleigh by 1960s CE making Lenournde facto an inner city suburb complete with large shopping malls & schools located just outside its borders surrounded by affluent white suburbs (albeit still considered rural) - largely unchanged since then apart from occasionalgentrification plots along I-85 corridor serving wealthier residents only
