Lenoir is one of three towns in Cherokee County and it is the only incorporated town in the county. The other two towns are Sugar Hill and Gastonia. Lenoir was founded on December 12, 1837, by John Lenoir and James Caldwell. The town was named after General David Lenoir who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first post office was established in 1838 and served Lenoir until 1865. In 1868, the post office moved to Gastonia and remained there until 1978 when it reopened at Lenoir. Lenoir has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa), with average annual rainfall of 914 in (2,474 mm). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Lenoir has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa) with hot summers and cold winters that sees significant snowfall during winter months.

Lenoir, North Carolina is a town in Surry County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1837 by Scots-Irish immigrants and became a town after it was incorporated as a village in 1889. Lenoir is located on the banks of the Yadkin River. Lenoir is named after General Francis Lenoir and his brother John Lenoir, who fought with General Robert E. Lee during the American Civil War. The battle that resulted in General Lenoir's death took place near here on November 9th, 1861. The general's body has been interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in Lenoir since then. In 1898, Lenoirs voted to annex what is now Kershaw County and become one municipality with a population of over 1,000 people; however this idea never materialized because of opposition from rural residents who felt they would lose their independence as well as businesses which were based outside of town limits. The first settler inLenoir was James Cummins who arrived in 1837 along with his family from Scotland via the packet boat "Kearsarge". He built a cabin on an island in the Yadkin River which he called "Cummins' Island" because he had leased land there from Captain John Smith two years earlier. Over time other settlers also came and established themselves throughout what is now Surry County: David McConnell settled at Beaver Dam Creek on February 14th, 1840; Solomon Cockerill landed at New Bern Landing on October 15th of same year; Nicholas Cook landed at Piney Point Ferry Landing on December 21st of same year; Samuel Vance landed near present day Huntersville late that winter (1840). In 1846 local farmers formed the Cumberland Parish Agricultural Society to buy and manage land comprising much of what is today Surry County adjoining neighboring Pittsylvania County including what are nowLenoir Township (including present day KershawCounty) . This group had several goals including: developing roadsides for crops and raising livestock for export to Richmond marketplaces; improving communication between different parts of the parish through surveys/ mapping/terrain classificationXXXXX ; building churches/schools within precincts boundariesXXXXX ; exchanging goods and services among membersXXXXX ; providing financial support to needy families XXXX On September 12th 1847 Reverend Wm Hargrave provided preaching services for three days before landing his party supplies at present day Broadwater Beach just downstream from White Rock Lake where they soon erected a small shack known as "Hargrave's Cabin." By 1850 most everyone living within township limits had moved out either due to lack of available land or religious persecution by nearby Baptist groups led by Rev Hargrave himself That year too Reverend Hargrive organized another church group called "The Episcopalians" which met monthly until their expulsion from Pittsylvania Parish less than two years later when barnstorming preacher Andrew Johnson Hayes set up shop nearby

In 1845, Lenoir became the capital of Tennessee when that state was created from parts of North Carolina and Virginia. The city continued to grow in size and importance until it reached its peak in 1870 when it had a population of 10,000. However, the city's growth slowed down after that point and it eventually lost its status as the capital in 1958. Today Lenoir is a small community located within the boundaries of Hendersonville.
