In 1923, Chapel Hill merged with Durham to form the Research Triangle Park which includesLenoir within its boundaries. The city's economy is based on research and development activities in business, engineering, health care and education; however, retail trade plays an important role as well. A variety of cultural attractions are available including art galleries, theaters and restaurants which attract visitors from surrounding counties including Wake County and Durham County. Grant Presidential Grant Foundation for its work to improve public health in Africa during Reconstruction.In 1870, Lenoir became one of the original townships within Rutherford County when it was created from parts of Charlotte and Johnston counties. In 1890, its name was changed to Newton after General James Newton (1807-1892), an American Civil War general who served as Commandant of Raleigh military prison at Beaufort Creek before becoming commander of Union forces at Petersburg Peninsula duringthe Battle of Petersburg Lenoir experienced some rapid growth during World War II due to its proximity to military installations such as Fort Bragg and Naval Weapons Station Patuxent River. However, by 1945 all but one building had been destroyed by fire or bombing raids; most residents chose not to rebuild because they were fearful that their homes would again be hit by air raid sirens or artillery fire
