In 1907, Electric Light CompanyOC built an eight-story structure known as "The Gilded Cage" on Main Street which remains standing today as one of Lenoir's most distinguishing features. This building provided electricity for all of Lenoir until 1974 when it was replaced by an electric substation that stands today next to IHOP restaurant across from Park Elementary School
