As early as 1792, settlers were noting greenery along Catawba Creek due to high elevation changes between its headwaters in Buncombe County and its mouth at Lake Normanslave Run where it empties into Raleigh-Durham Airport; these alluvial deposits are today noted by numerous small lakes dotting Lenoir's watershed including Devil's Fork Wildlife Management Area off central intersection Road 9A about 2 miles north of town center on Patterson Road.) However, after the end of World War II there was no significant growth until the late 1960s when annexations occurred in adjacent towns which led to an increase in population. Today, Lenoir is an small community with few industry or commercial interests remaining and its economy is based primarily on agriculture (primarily corn) and tourism.
