He named his community after General James Lenoir (1786-1865), an officer with distinction during the Seminole Wars who served as military governor of Florida from 1813-1815. "Lenoir" originated as an anglicized form of Irish name O'Neill which meant "the place where rivers flow," or "baile na bhfuil," meaning "the territory between two hills." In 1829 Captain John Aiken purchased 2,000 acres (10 km2) of what would eventually be Lenoir from Sir Walter Raleigh II for $5 per acre ($140/km²). This purchase included much valuable real estate including much of what is now downtown Lenoir and parts of other towns such as Beavercreek Township and High Point Township
