In 1860, it became part of Person County and the county seat moved to Wilmington in 1912. On January 1, 1922, Lenoir merged with Newton to form Lenoir-Newton-Myrtle Beach Combined Statistical Area. The combined population reached 9,500 in 2000 and 12,500 in 2010. Lenoir is located at (35.756815,-81.565959). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 12,500 people residing in Lenoir; 7% were Black or African American and 92% white non-Hispanic

The town experienced rapid growth during the early nineteenth century due to cotton production and its proximity to the port of Wilmington. In 1827, Lenoir became a state capital as part of North Carolina’s secession from the Union. It remained an important industrial center until the mid-19th century when it lost significant manufacturing jobs to neighboringstates such as Tennessee and Georgia. Afterward, Lenoir slowly declined relative to other nearby towns until it fell out of prominence in the twentieth century. Today, only a few scattered remnants remain within reach of modern day Lenoir residents. Lenoir is located in rural northeastern North Carolina at 36° 15′ N / 93° 56′ W (36 miles east of Raleigh). The town was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1753 following their arrival from Ireland via boat across Lake Tyndall into what is now North Carolina. At that time, local Native Americans were already living hereabouts and some sources claim that they did so for years before European settlement began . Over time though English settlers gradually replaced Scottish/Irish colonists in this area which explains why there are no direct evidence linking either group with any particular place name or land ownership beyond what may have been claimed by chance or migration alone . The earliest written record we have of Lenoir comes from 1693 when Captain John Maxwell reported seeing “a great number” of people living near present day Lenoir Creek on Catawba River . A year later he noted that “the natives do carry off all kindsof goods they find upon our voyage up these rivers” which suggests that this area likely served as a Trading Post or Base Camp for fur traders operating along both sides of the river during this period . However, it's not clear how much longer these trading posts operated before eventually being abandoned or burned down due to hostile indigenous groups or lack thereof ) In 1753 Rev JohnLenoir founded his own community hereon Catawba River after arriving back from America's Revolutionary War leadership position with General James Wilkinson - one half brotherof George Washington himself! His original home still stands today just north of downtown lenior – complete with imposing white clapboard Second Empire style courthouse & walls topped off by Classical Corinthian pilasters !! What started as a simple Presbyterian Church growth into one of America's most thriving villages ... becoming known for its dynamic mercantile establishments (including 3 large warehouses!), Distinguished Citizens including many Governors & Judges (!), Gilded Age Mansion built for Speaker Andrew Johnson on adjacent lots (as seen on TV show "The Beverly Hillbillies"), Present Day Old Town Hall Community Coffee House & Museum annexe !! From humble beginnings Stated MrJohnLenoor aboutlenior: "I laid out my plot…and made me house; I got good water [from] Moncrieffe Pond….I laid out streets etc…."& added "…I raised corn…..and made hay…." In short – pretty typical everyday life back then!! As stated earlier many folks who lived hereabouts went on to become prominent NC Gov't Officials including several Senators (& Dr Samuel Jones) .... etc All sorts Of Interesting Stuff happened Here! On November 5th 1948 When UNC Chapel Hillgraduated Dr Martin Luther King Jr right after traveling thru Volunteer State 10 hrs nonstop!) So Some Things DO actually Happen HERE!!! Anyway lets moveOn!" Lenoir was founded in 1819 by Captain John S. Lenoir and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for General James Lenoir, who had died in 1818. The Lenoirs were the first white people to settle in the area, and their farmstead is still standing. In 1824, Captain Lenoir donated land to the town for a public square and schoolhouse. The Lenoir family continued to live in the town until 1886 when they moved to Raleigh.
