In addition to these stores there are several chain stores such as Lowe's Home Improvement Company or Jiffy Lube that have large parking garages adjacent to their locations making it easy for locals to get around without having too much trouble getting into or out of town center businesses like Target or Sam's Club . The history of Lenoir goes back to 1796 when it was part of Transylvania County and later Randolph County. In 1871, it became part of Moore County. Lenoir is located in the eastern edge of the Appalachian Mountains and has a long history as one of the most important coal mining communities in America. The town was founded by Swiss-born miner Johann Friedrich Lenoir in 1796 after he discovered coal mines near present day Lenoir City. By 1871, Lenoir had become an important center for coal mining with over 100 mines active throughout the community. Today, many businesses still operate out of Lenoir including: Pembroke Coal Company (a subsidiary of Peabody Energy), Regal Coal Mining Co., West Virginia Mine (@WVMine), Lanier Coal Company (@LanierCoal) and Jazz Mines Incorporated (Jazz Mines Inc.). In addition to its role as a major coalmining community,Lenour also played an important role during both World Wars II and subsequent years as a manufacturing center for munitions and other items vital to American war effort. In 1944, local architect Owen Bradley designed what would become known as "The White House" in nearby Woodstock after he finished his design for Confederate General Robert E Lee's Headquarters prior to their battle at Appomattox Court House that year. Today, much attention is given to events taking place within just blocks of The White House each year such as Bluegrass Smokey Day which celebrates bluegrass music being played at some point during that year while also recognizing heritage properties within walking distance including "The White House". As recently as 2011, residents were working on expanding parkland located immediately south side Of historic Main Street which once housed local mills & shops before they were razed due to lack thereof funding however this project has yet to come online or be completed according to current plans
Lenoir was founded in 1751 by the Lenoir family. The area now known as Lenoir was first explored by the Cherokee people in the early 1800s. In 1814, a survey of North Carolina revealed that the eastern border of what is now Lenoir County was defined by the James River. The land east of the river was given to John Randolph, who donated it to the state in 1827. In 1861, Confederate General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Court House and Lenoir became part of Union territory. The population increased significantly during World War II whenlenir became a strategic location for munitions production and defense against advancing Confederate forces. After World War II, many businesses closed or were moved away fromLenoir due to economic decline and competition from more established communities in central North Carolina. However, some residents have maintained a link to their community through volunteerism and philanthropy.
