Lenoir is a town in N.C. It was founded by James Lenoir in 1847, and it became a city in 1907. The population was 16,856 at the 2010 census. The name comes from the Cherokee word leni-wari meaning "place of the white man." Lenoir is located in southeastern Alamance County, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Raleigh and 20 miles (32 km) west of Chapel Hill. It is bordered to the north by Huntersville and to the south by Rocky Mount. According to the United States Census Bureau, Lenoir has a total area of 5 square miles (13 km2), all land. The settlement at Lenoir consisted of two log cabins built on high ground overlooking what is now downtown Lenoir. James Lenoir set out to make his community an important cultural center for eastern North Carolina and he soon saw that his logs needed support so he began building homesites around his logs for settlers who would use them as their homes and businesses. In 1850, JamesLenior bought 8 acres (3 ha) northeast of present day downtown Lenoir from Johnlocher for £600 including 300 bushels of wheat per acre ($15/ha). He named this new place Hancock after General Nathaniel Hawkins who had led American forces against Native Americans during the Revolution. By 1860, Hancock had become one of the most important settlements in eastern Nc., with over 100 residents living there agriculturally and manufacturing goods such as furniture and clothing for local markets within driving distance both northward into Randolph County through Hillsborough County near Durham and eastward into Buncombe County through Asheville via Hunterdon Valley.
