In 1829–30, James Giddens built a gristmill on present-day Pettit Road just outside Lenoir's limits. That mill continued in operation until 1925; it ground only cornmeal and flour before being replaced by the current Lenoir Mills facility which opened in 1963. The buildings at Pettit Road are still standing; they were razed during the early 2000s to make way for a new housing development. Lenoir also has two churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1865) and Second Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1898). Both churches are significant cultural attractions in their own right; First Baptist Chapel features historically inspired stained glass windows dating back to 1886 while Second Methodist features original condition brick church building from 1909 that houses a museum with exhibits about Methodism in North Carolina. Lenoir's economy base consists mostly of agriculture but some manufacturing such as textiles and plastics production takes place there as well; other businesses located around town include grocery stores (including one from 2003 until 2009), mechanic services, real estate firms, restaurants/cafés/bars/, woodworking supplies store etc.. There are also three high schools within walking distance of town: Lenoir High School (established 1954), First Presbyterian Academy (established 1907), and Eastern Hills Elementary School (opened 1957).
