Lenoir is a city in Granville County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,542 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Lenoir was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1788 and named after Colonel James Lenoir, an American Revolutionary War general who fought for the British. Lenoir is located on the banks of the Neuse River near its confluence with the Yadkin River. The city takes its name from James Lenoir (1728–1812), an American Revolutionary War general who fought for the British and unsuccessfully attempted to purchase North Carolina from the Cherokee Nation. Lenoir experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its location as one of numerous military airfields used by Allied forces in Europe and Japan. In 1945, when America ended World War II, Lenoir's population had reached 25,000; it peaked at 37,100 in 1960. since then it has slowly declined until reaching 7,500 as of 2010. Lenoir was reincorporated as a city in 1972 following a referendum that approved a merger between two other Granville County cities - Apex and Huntersville - which had been composed of separate municipalities since 1961 when those two towns merged into one larger municipality under their original name: Lenoir-Apex-Huntersville Borough (LAAH). At that time both Lenoir and Apex had populations over 10K but only 5K residents lived within each town limits so their combined population would be about 20K or so total including annexed areas such as Carytown outside of Apex and Rocky Mount east of Huntersville making up what is now known as HendersonCountyNC . This merger occurred despite being opposed by many residents living within LAAH boundaries because they felt they were losing control over their own communities while consolidated power went to outsiders without giving Residents a say in how things were done; this issue still remains unresolved today with no resolution announced nor close likelihood given current political conditions As part of LAAH's governance structure several committees operate which include: Planning & Development Committee responsible for developing new housing developments; Economic Development Committee responsible for advancing economic development goals through partnerships with businesses & organizations; Environmental Affairs Committee& Housing Advisory Board which provides feedback on proposed zoning changes impacting residential neighborhoods; Community Development Authority whose mission is to increase access to quality affordable housing opportunities within our City Limits’ neighborhoods through blight elimination/urban redevelopment initiatives & marketing programs; Parks Department whose responsibility includes providing programming &Management services for local parkland including Headwaters Parkadvisor Program Office ; Arts District consisting primarily of 2 small theaters located along US 301 northbound just past milepost 24 ; Schools operated by Wake County public schools where students attendcounties participating in WakeNC Common Core Curriculum . Prior to 1972 annexation efforts were sporadic at best leaving much unincorporated land undeveloped save for a few small parcels surrounding downtown area currently home to various restaurants , bars , retailers etc.; however annexation activity has increased markedly over last few years culminating with recent passage by city council OF A Bylaw allowing annexed areas inside downtown limits ! This trend suggests that developer sentiment towards approved annexations may have softened somewhat since consolidation took place but there is no easy answer given Mayor Beasley's opposition stance towards any form of further annexation ). In recent years several large apartment complexes have been constructed adjacent to downtown making use of open space around old industrial buildings vacated by previous occupants or simply left vacant because property values plummeted following economies recession . These developments appear largely out of necessity rather than design considerations having little impact on overall urban landscape or character

Lenoir was founded in 1792 as a small town on the Pee Dee River. In 1814, Lenoir became the seat of Tryon County, North Carolina. The county was dissolved in 1835 and its lands divided among other counties. Lenoir remained an unincorporated community until 1951 when it incorporated under state law.
