Lenoir was founded by white men in 1835 and named for General John Gist Lenoir, who fought in the American Revolution. The town was incorporated on July 16, 1867. Lenoir is located at (36.511816,-75.501068). According to the USGS National Map, it has a total area of , of which is land and 0.3% is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,644 people residing in the town. The population density was 375/km² (1,052/sqmi). There were 806 housing units at an average densityof 209/km² (473/sqmi). The racial makeup of the town was 97% White, 2% African American, 0% Native American, and 2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3% of the population
