Lenoir was founded in 1796 by General John Lenoir as a post office on the Yadkin River. The first store opened in 1802 and the first school in 1803. In 1809, General James Wilkinson built a sawmill on the river and named it after him. The town grew gradually until it reached its peak during the late 19th century when it had over 100 residents and two churches. After a period of decline during World War I and World War II, Lenoir experienced an influx of new residents during the early 21st century due to its growing job market and strong economic development since 2000.

The first post office in Lenoir was established on December 12, 1827, and was called Springdale; it changed its name to Lenoir on November 10, 1830. A store opened in 1829 and continued to serve as the town's main business until 1840 when a gristmill became operational. In 1849, Methodists built a church inLenoir which remains one of the town's most popular attractions today . In 1863-1864 Confederate forces burned down two churches in Lenoor during their march through Moore County for reasons still unknown . One theory suggests that General Sherman may have been responsible for this attack since he had ordered his troops not to burn any towns or villages they passed through while marching through Moore County; however no evidence has ever been found linking Sherman directly to this event. In 1865-1866 Union forces burned down several more homes and churches throughout Lenoir after they captured nearby Chapel Hill during the Battle of Alamance Court House; however this event is generally considered less significant than other local attacks carried out by Union forces during the war years. In 1899-1900 slate quarries were constructed near present dayLenoir Village and these operations remain important today due to the high quality of slate available in central North Carolina. Slate prices continue to be very profitable for landowners across central North Carolina due to this activity). Although agriculture plays an important role within Lenoir’s economy today (primarily corn production), manufacturing also continues to play an important role over time with some notable examples including: coke ovens made by American Gas Works (now ExxonMobil) ; Ford automobiles ; Pritchard’s plow steel company which manufactured tractors until deregulation closed that industry around 1960 ;and many more small businesses that have grown up over time around what is now Main Street downtown."
