In 1930, all textile mills closed in Randolph County and Lenoir lost its status as an agricultural center; however, it remains one of the most popular tourist destinations in Randolph County today. Traveling east from Lenoir towards Asheboro or west from Lenoir towards Greensboro will take you through some parts of Northern Randolph County that have very high populations densities (>1,000 people/square mile), such as Gastonia and Hickorytown-Mandahee Island which are both located within 15 miles (24 kilometers) of each other on larger pieces of land than Lenoir proper but have much lower populations rates (<100 people/square mile). Lenoir is a town in Lenoir County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lenoir County. Lenoir was founded by an Irishman named Hugh Lenoir in 1796 and named for him. In 1827, the town acquired its current name from James Fenton lenormandizing it to "Lenoir." The community of Southport was annexed to Lenoir in 1902. The first post office opened in 1827 and was known as Fentonville until 1840 when it changed its name to Lenoir. A sawmill and grist mill were built here in the early 19th century; they have been preserved as historical landmarks. In 1865, John Crouch became owner of a flour mill on Catawba River which he operated until 1868 when he sold it to Jno Pemberton who built a corn mill here that same year. The present day Post Office building was completed c1892. In 1886, Maudie Ewing became postmaster after her husband Robert’s death and she ran the post office until 1904 when she succeeded her husband as postmaster lady with title “Governor” (the title has since been retired).
