Laurinburg is an unincorporated community in Wake County, North Carolina, United States. It is located on the western bank of the Yadkin River, north of Raleigh. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg first appeared on maps in 1851 as a small settlement on the other side of the Yadkin River from where pioneers Satchel Paige and James Fenton acquired land for what is now Wake County. The town site was laid out by justices Edward Crawford and Willis Sellers in 1852 after they surveyed the area for a new courthouse. The town was named for Lieutenant Colonel John A. Laurin (1792-1868), one of the founders of Wake County and its first sheriff. Captain Elias Bardon (1796-1867) served as Mayor from 1853 to 1861; he also founded Bardonville and operated a sawmill there until his death in 1865. On December 12, 1865, Laurinburg received its own post office under act of Congress approved December 5th by Major General Jubal Early. The first store opened in 1857 at what is now West Main Street and it continued to be operated until 1902 when it became part of the new First National Bank building which still stands today across from nearby Cary High School). In 1907 two schools were built: East Side Elementary School for grades K-4 and South Side Elementary School for grades 5-8 which remain today as part of Cary Middle School #2 together with several other buildings that were added over time including a Presbyterian Church (built 1912), Statehouse Annex (1922), Post Office Annex (1986), Knightsbridge Apartments (1987) - all are used currently or will soon be so! A cotton gin was built in 1911 by Jno Easley but later closed due to economic problems and demolition began in 1984/85; however parts have been preserved both inside and outside along with some original machinery including a large waterwheel that continues to spin today! Dozens more homes were added during ensuing years such as Cedar Grove subdivision built 1955 just east of present day I-95 near Garner Road while Springdale Addition was constructed adjacent to current day Interstate 85 just west of US 421 interchange; this annexation created much controversy given comments made about potential racial implications given that many people who lived there at that time would have had African American neighbors! There's even an open air museum dedicated specifically to African Americans living through those times called "Mammy's Home" situated next door to Springdale Elementary school since 1985! Finally following suit within recent years has been Crossroads Shopping Center – homebuilders included? – located off Blacklick Road just southwest of exit 10B off I-95 providing much needed retail outlets not only locally but also throughout eastern NC & beyond!! Overall Laurinburg has faced some tough times over time but thankfully with continuing efforts by our local government & businesses alike things are slowly improving–albeit slowly!

Laurinburg was founded in 1792 by white settlers. The town was named for General James Laurin, who commanded a British military campaign against the Creek Indians in 1791. In 1818, Laurinburg became the capital of Caldwell County.
