Laurinburg is a small town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 4,543 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is the county seat of Henderson County. The first settlers in Laurinburg were farmers who arrived around 1800. By 1818, there were four families living in what is now Laurinburg. The first post office was established in 1820 and by 1830, there were ten residents in the town. Laurinburg grew rapidly due to its strategic location on the Yellow River and its riverboat trade which provided transportation between Louisville, Kentucky and Wilmington, Delaware. After a series of floods that destroyed much of central Henderson County in 1865-1966, Laurinburg became one of the most aid-dependent communities in America as it relied heavily upon federal government funding for reconstruction projects such as water systems and schools. In 1971, Laurinburg became an independent city when it amalgamated with neighboring Burlington to form the municipality of Burlington/Laurinburg/Hendersonville. In 1999, it merged with Gaston to form Gaston/Laurinberg/Hendersonville again which remains its current name today. In 2002, Burlington annexed nearby Cary from Durham County creating a new municipality with a population of over 100K people before splitting off into two municipalities once again - Burlington/Gaston and Cary/Burlington (which had a population over 50K).

Laurinburg is a small town in the Pender County area of North Carolina, United States. The population was 531 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg was founded in 1853 by Scots-Irish immigrants. Its name is derived from the Irish word "láirín," meaning redoubt or fortress. The first settler in Laurinburg was John Gorman, who arrived in 1853 and built a cabin on what is today's Main Street. He and his family were followed by others over the next several years, including James McNamara, who came in 1855. McNamara and his wife, Catherine (Catherine) McAllister,settled two miles east of Laurinburg on high ground that still stands today known as Point Pleasant Hill Cemetery. The Gormans also founded a log farm some three miles west of town on land which now forms the eastern edge of Walmart parking lot across from the old post office building on Courthouse Road. In 1861, Colonel Robert Ewing organized an army for Confederate service under Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest and moved his headquarters to Laurinburg where he installed himself as commandant of all Confederate forces within Pender County west of New Bern Railroad Depot. In 1865, when Union troops captured Fort Fisher during Sherman's January 1863 march through Coastal Carolina they burned much of Fort Laurence near present-day Wilmington before moving south to First Baptist Church on Hilton Head Island where they remained until May 1st 1865 when they withdrew to safety outside Cape Fear River Bridge just north of present day Laurinburg limits
