Laurinburg is a small town in Forsyth County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,847 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is part of the Greensboro–Winston-Salem–High Point metropolitan area. It is located just northeast of Greensboro and northwest of Winston-Salem. Laurinburg has a humid subtropical climate with temperatures that vary greatly from day to day and season to season. The first permanent settler in Laurinburg was Captain Daniel Boone who arrived in 1759 and built a house on the original site of today's Main Street. A post office called Laurinburg was established in 1827, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1892. In 1881, General Jubal Early founded what is now Appalachian College here after leaving West Point where he had been captain of the 4th Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. In 1903, when primary schools were opened for white students only within Forsyth County (the county then included all but one of modern-day Forsyth County), Laurinburg's first schoolmaster, Jno Waddell Hubbard, ran a black primary school which served grades K-8 as well as his own home pupils for 3 years before moving to Rocky Mount outside Raleigh to open one there also. This "First African School" closed by 1916 because white schoolteachers refused to teach black children together with whites without special privileges or separate classrooms; moreover they claimed that this type of relationship would breed interracial academic rivalries instead of learning Community life skills necessary for success on campus A new elementary/middle/junior high school opened in 1951 named after Mrs Anna Boggs Holcombe (1866-1951) an early advocate for racial integration both inside and outsideof North Carolina education; Mrs Boggs herself being some local property owner who donated land for use as an educational center which became known as 'Boggs Hall'.
