Laurinburg is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,601 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is the county seat of Wilson County. It lies on the Yadkin River and is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1867 by settlers from Scotland who had moved to what is now eastern North Carolina after being displaced by the Cherokee Indian Removal Act of 1830. The Scotsmen named their new town after Lauriston, an estate they had seen while surveying the area for a railroad company's line through what is now Wilson and Orange counties. In 1868, Laurinburg became one of twelve townships in Wilson County created from portions of Burke County following a state constitutional amendment granted to that county by General Statute 924.4 (relating to local government). Laurinburg's economy until recently has been principally agricultural with some Manufacturing activity taking place as well; however, this has been changing over time as more and more people have begun moving into the town for its unique attractions and climate which includes rolling hills and temperatures below freezing during most months year-round.
