High capacity kits (HCKs) are a type of kit that allows for the installation of multiple large-capacity water Hoses and Pumping Stations in one go. To meet the needs of Laurinburg’s growing population, Hi Tech Water Solutions Inc., a company specializing in small-scale water distribution systems, submitted a proposal for development of an HCK system that would include two large-capacity hoses and two pumping stations. The project was accepted and Hi Tech Water Solutions began construction on its first HCK project – the Expansion Project – in 2002. Since its inception, Hi Tech Water Solutions has completed several other high capacity kit projects throughout North Carolina including the renovation of local businesses and schools as well as upgrades to existing pump stations. In 2013, Hi Tech Water Solutions donated $5 million towards the purchase of new infrastructure necessary for expanding their operations into neighboring counties – making them one of the largest donors ever made to community organizations working with municipalities across North Carolina.

A post office called Laurinburg was established in 1877, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1922. The community was named after General David G. Laurin, who served as commander of Confederate forces during the Buncombe Campaign of 1862. The first store in Laurinburg was built on Main Street by Wm Hargrave and Jno Latham; it closed around 1908. A sawmill and gristmill were also established here soon after. In 1915, Wm Nolen founded the first electric Cooperative in North Carolina; this company became known as Knox Electric Company later that year. In 1921, a school was built to serve the local farmers; this institution remains operational today (grades Pre-K to 12th grade). In 1928, Cherokee High School opened for students in grades 7 through 11; this school currently serves as an alternative education option for students living within a mile or two of downtown Auraria Campus located on Indianola Road northwest of town limits. During World War II, many residents worked on farms near Camp Butler while they awaited mobilization orders; these people are sometimes erroneously referred to as "Laurinburians." After the war ended, many residents returned home and resumed their farming practices—a process that took several decades overall. In 1959–1960, Laurinburg experienced its first annexation by neighboring town Carrboro – both communities had been struggling with resident population growth since the early 1970s when Interstate 95 bypassed town limits entirely southward from Asheville towards Carrboro Township – but despite being csactly annexed by Carrboro (the only other municipality within Buncombe County at that time), Laurinburg retains its own governing body consisting of a Mayor/Council with membership appointed by Mayor John French Sr., and various other elected officials including fire marshal/police chief/, commercial administrator/, public works director/, planning & zoning commissioner/. Today's mayor is John French Jr.. On July 16th 2009 Laurinberg birthed their very own Facebook page called "Laurinenburgh" which quickly gained popularity among locals for all things related to their smalltown lifestyle
