The first firearms in the Laurinburg area were handguns. A man named John Wesley Hardeman started manufacturing pistols in 1836. In 1841, he began making rifles and shotguns. The Laurinburg Rifle Association was founded in 1892. The town of Laurinburg was incorporated in 1907. In 1916, the United States Cavalry Regiment was stationed here and the first cavalry unit to be stationed in North Carolina arrived here with their mounted troopers on July 4th 1916.

In 1835, a man named John C. Worth founded the town of Laurinburg on the Hiwassee River in present-day North Carolina. The town was named for General James Laurin, who fought in the American Revolution and was later an officer in the Creek War. In 1836, Worth built a log cabin at what is now the junction of U.S. 11 and NC 12 near what is now downtown Laurinburg. The first settler to live in Laurinburg was John Parson, who arrived in 1837. In 1840, a post office was established at Laurinburg with Wm Price as its first employee. By 1852, there were twelve families living in Laurinburg. By 1860, there were seventy-five people living in Laurinburg and it had a school and stores. By 1870, Laurinburg had a population of one hundred eighty-four people and it had five stores and four schools. In 1880, Aurignacie Drury bought the town from Worth for $5 per acre ($160 total). Drury renamed it High Point after his family's ancestral home high up on Mount Hiwassee in Georgia (now Mount Airy). Drury began to build homes around High Point while also developing other businesses such as sugar beets (a type of sugar) plantations near High Point and selling goods grown at those plantations to local consumers via wagon trains conveying produce back to Atlanta or Savannah
Laurinburg is a town in Pickens County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,044 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pickens County. Laurinburg is located on the Yadkin River and around its confluence with the Patuxent River. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Pickens County were French voyageurs who passed through the area in 1721-22. In 1745, Englishman John Reynolds settled a small community called "Drurytown" on land that later became Laurinburg. The town was named for General James Ewing's wife, Margaret Drury (1714-1783). Laurinburg played an important role during Reconstruction and has been designated as a National Historic Landmark. Laurinburg was founded by Methodists from Caroline County in 1839 as a meeting place for their members who had gathered near Mount Carmel Baptist Church on Yadkin Riverbank. The original Cochran farmhouse still stands in Laurinburg and is used as a museum today; it was built about 1840 by Nicholas Cochran and his wife Martha Cochran. Gaston Laddis settled here about 1840 after leaving Nags Head when he bought 5 acres of low country near present day White Rocks Road from David Wilder Jones Sr., one of Johnston's three brothers-in-law who had married Laddis' sister Nancy Irelande Hickerson (1819-1885). Gaston Laddis operated a toll road across the Yadkin Valley connecting Charlottesville, Virginia to Petersburg, Virginia via Appomattox Court House before 1852 when this route became part of US 421 Alternate under construction between Harrisonburg and Petersburg In 1851 Pritchard leased 2½ acres south of present day White Rocks Road from Gaston Laddis which formed what would become Mrsrsrs Chapel School which opened September 9th 1850 taught by Methodist ministers Wm Henson & Jno Aulders with additions made by Wm Fenton Mrs Gertrude Cummins august 1861 Mr Ira Sexton rented land east side of present day White Rocks Road from Gaston Laddis February 1862 until 1865 when it passed into private hands with consequent cessation of public education Thereafter school continued at home until 1895 when new building erected west side White Rocks Rd next to old church The first post office in Laurinberg was established on July 6th, 1839 under the name "Newbern". It moved to its current location on May 15th 1860 When Johnston took over command at First Brigade Corps Army during Jubal Early's Assault against Confederate forces near Bull Run Bridge on April 14th 1862 he ordered all military stores be burned resulting in the death or capture of most people involved including many local men employed there such as Captain William S Lee Managing Editor Davidson's Wharf store proprietor Cuthbert Cary Store Keeper Samuel Manning aforesaid We reported these facts to Major Johnston He said they were true And ordered them done Captain Ransom Trueblood commanding brigade did execute them At least 25 men Died or were Captured therein But some may have died also From exposure To weather conditions On April 21st we again met With Maj Johnston He asked us whither our goods Were All told You That They Had Been Burned We replied No What good did that do Us Major Johnston said You Will Be Satisfied We then directed you To Go Back To Your Place And Leave All This to Our Management

Laurinburg was a small town in Randolph County, North Carolina, from 1833 to 1865. Laurinburg was founded in 1833 by John A. Laurin and his brother-in-law David W. Holmes as a post office on the western border of Randolph County. The first settlers were consisting of three families who arrived in two wagons from Virginia on July 25, 1833. The community had only six residents when it was platted on October 10, 1833 by J.W.Dowell with land grants from the British government. The town grew rapidly due to the opening of the Cumberland Road and the development of transportation systems within Randolph County which made goods and passengers available for shipment throughout much of eastern North Carolina. By 1865, Laurinburg had grown to 1,500 residents and was one of the most important locations in eastern North Carolina because it offered goods and services to both military units stationed in nearby Raleigh and civilian populations located near its borders with Johnston County (to the east) and Buncombe County (to the west). During its time as a smalltown, Laurinburg experienced some significant changes that have left an impact on its culture today: In 1834, J.W Powell donated land for a public school which quickly became one of Laurinburg's most important assets; in 1840, Charles Healy began construction on what is now known as Old Orange Street; in 1851, Jesse Huddleston opened what are now known as Healy's Drug Store and Post Office; also during this period, records show that there were at least two churches built: First Baptist Church (1834), later renamed United Presbyterian Church (1850); Second Baptist Church (1848). By 1865 after Confederate forces sacked Fort Greenville along the Yadkin River during Robert E Lee's campaign against Union troops there were few remaining intact large towns south of Raleigh so Laurinberg slowly declined until it ceased entirely following Union occupation in April 1865
Laurinburg was founded in 1775 by the McDowell family. It was named for General James McDowell, who fought in the American Revolution. The town became a center for coalmining and manufacturing after the discovery of coal deposits here. Laurinburg also played a significant role in early North Carolina history as a military and political stronghold of the Patriot forces during the revolution.
