Laurinburg, North Carolina is a town in Davie County, Florida. It is the county seat of Davie County and it was founded on February 12, 1836 by Captain John Colter and his family. The first store in Laurinburg was called "The Post Office" and operated from a log building which still stands today. On October 3, 1839, the town had its first election and James Broughton was elected as the first mayor of Laurinburg. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Pee Wee Crayton decided to move his headquarters south from Jacksonville to Fort Sumter in Laurinburg. He ordered all cannons that could be moved to Laurinburg so that they could be used against Union forces. As a result of this decision, many guns were lost or destroyed in battle at Fort Sumter.
