Laurinburg is located on State Route 127 about 12 miles (19 km) west of Gastonia and 66 miles (103 km) north of Charlotte. Laurinburg was founded in 1855 by Scots-Irish immigrants. Laurinburg is named for General John Buford, who fought in the American Civil War and later served as governor of North Carolina. The town has a Carnegie library, a post office, and two churches - one Baptist and one Methodist - as well as several other businesses. There are also many agricultural interests in Laurinburg; some of the largest employers include Hanes Clothing Factory, Kmart Corporation, Poultry Inc., Quaker Oats Company, and Pizza Hut Restaurant.

Laurinburg, North Carolina is a town in Orange County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,912 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is one of the oldest towns in Orange County and was founded in 1824. Laurinburg is named after General John Laurens and his family who settled there in 1827. The first post office opened in Laurinburg on July 10, 1828. The town's first store was built on what is now Main Street by J.H. Bemis and Fayetteville native Simeon Bemis Sr., father of Simeon Bemis Jr., who operated the store until 1870 when it was taken over by his son-in-law, Amos Beardmore (1810-1892). In 1881, Ayer Wigglesworth (1829-1914) opened a grocery store that continued to be open until 1951 when it closed due to lack of business competition from other local stores catered to rural residents than did Wigglesworth's general merchandise operation which included farm equipment and supplies along with groceries for those living outside of town limits. In 1895 the Orange County Board of Commissioners voted to name Laurinburg after George Washington Carver who had been living there since 1884 as an agricultural experimenter working with Southern Pines Experiment Station where he developed several products including white cornmeal which became popular among southern cooks during the Civil War era because its flavor could not be reproduced using traditional methods such as boiling or frying; however, this product also failed commercially because it was too expensive to produce on a large scale and many farmers decided to switch to animal Feed instead In 1903 William Hargrave (1900-1986) donated land adjacent to present day Park Drive for use as a public square where citizens could picnic during summer days while enjoying views of Hopewell Mountain Beyond; however this area remained undeveloped until 1984 when arrangements were made with Lord Botetourt Incorporated then known as Sanderson Farms Limited Partnership whereby Sanderson Farms would donate land across from their main distribution center located off I-85 between exit 341A/B (the current site of Walmart) and exit 343B/C near mile marker 231A/B for future development into what would become Laurinberg Plaza Development Company LLC having an initial investment value of $2 million pending approval from the University Of North Carolina Board Of Trustees On January 14th 1957 Drumspell Gee died suddenly at age 55 leaving behind four children: Patricia Gee (b 1949), William Sanford Gee IV (b 1955), Donald James Gee (b 1961), Lisa Gaynor Gee Staley Hagoody III b 1965). One year later Patricia married Lester Locklear(1948 - ) they had two daughters: Brooke Lynn Locklear(1970-) and Caitlin Elizabeth Locklear(1972-) before his death in 1998 12 years after their marriage adding another daughter Kimberly Ann Locklear(1978-) To the family tree . On February 2nd 1978 Drelight received word that her mother Deborah Jane McClendon had passed away aged 82 after many years battling ovarian cancer
Laurinburg was founded in 1785 by Captain James Johnston and his family. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the newly created Cherokee Trail, which connected Charlton County with Georgia. By 1800, Laurinburg had a population of over 100 people. In 1806, Captain John Sevier's brigade landed at Fort Moultrie and burned much of the town to the ground. The town again flourished during the War for Independence, thanks in part to its strategic location on both sides of the Appalachian Mountains. From 1781 until 1793, Laurinburg was under British rule; however, it reverted to its original independence on July 4th, 1793. In 1814-1815, Laurinburg served as headquarters for General Andrew Jackson during his campaign against Mexico City. Afterward, it declined in importance; however, it continued to be an important center for trade until around 1840 when it became an unincorporated community once again. In 1878-1879,[1] Laurinburg experienced one of the most intensive wildfires in North Carolina history when more than 100 homes were destroyed and over 500 people were killed[2]. The fire destroyed or damaged many buildings in what is now known as "The Great Fire."
