The first gun that was regularly cleaned in Laurinburg was an English pistol which was owned by Colonel John Sevier. He kept it clean and stored it under his bed until 1832 when he sold it to Captain James Patton. In 1836, Captain Patton donated a rifle to the town of Laurinburg which was then used as a public shooting range. After Captain Patton’s death, his rifle passed through several hands before being purchased by General Leslie Johnston in 1865. General Johnston kept the rifle in his home until 1893 when it was given to Mrs. Hargrave Morrison who then donated it to the city of Laurinburg. In 1898, Mrs. Morrison donated another shotgun to the city of Laurinburg which also served as its police department’s primary firearm until 1937 when a new armory was built and they began using handguns instead. Today, both guns are still held by the city as part of their museum collection along with many other firearms from past times in Laurinburg including cannons, rifles and shotguns

Laurinburg is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 4,913 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is located on the Durham-Chapel Hill line and straddles the border of Gaston and Randolph counties. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first settler in Laurinburg was John Tryon, who arrived in 1802. After some years he sold his land to James Aiken. In 1814 Alexander Hildebrandt purchased land from Tryon and built a cabin near what is now downtown Laurinburg. He named his community after his father, Lutheran pastor Jens Hildebrandt. The first school in Laurinburg was opened by teacher Lewis Lapp on January 10, 1816. In 1840s there were two large plantations in Laurinburg: "Cato" and "Piney". They were owned by Colonel John Moultrie and Captain John Pemberton respectively. Both men had come to America from Denmark with their families as early as 1792 along with other Danish immigrants such as Major Nicholas Rasmussen (1775–1851). Colonel Moultrie started farming within a few miles of today's downtown Laurinburg while Captain Pemberton developed Piney into one of the largest tobacco plantations in North Carolina during this time period; it still exists today as "Old Piney." The first post office for Laurinberg was established on December 12, 1824 by General Edmund Kirby Smith Jr.. The town was first settled by Scots colonists in 1753. The first permanent settler arrived in 1760 and named their community after their home country, Scotland. By 1827 Laurinburg had a population of over 300 people and was considered to be one of the most important settlements in North Carolina. In 1828, Laurinburg became an unincorporated community within Wake County. In 1852, local farmer John Waddell donated land to build a school system in Laurinburg. The town's schools were opened in 1857 and remain operational to this day. During Reconstruction (1865-1912), many African Americans worked as teachers or white laborers in Laurinburg; however, these relationships eventually deteriorated because many whites view African Americans as inferior beings who should not have been allowed into society at all. This discrimination persisted until well into the 20th century. During World War II many residents served inside or outside of the military; some even served with distinction like Private First Class Genevieve Hokeman who fought Wearmouth-class submarines off Cape Fear River from 1945-1946; and Lieutenant Colonel Clyde Aiken who commanded UDTs (Utah Infantry Division) along Iwo Jima during Operation Peleliu from 1942-1945 After World War II, Laurinbergians experienced some economic success thanks to new industries such as trucking, tourism, engineering firms and other businesses established throughout downtown Laurinburg during the 1950s through 1970s - including PPG Industries Inc., Toyota Motors Corporation and others In recent years there has been significant redevelopment taking place with several high-rise buildings being built around downtown since 2000 including Lumberyard Center mall & hotels developments adjacent thereto
