Binoculars have been a part of people’s lives for centuries. Laurinburg, North Carolina is home to the first binocular factory in the United States. The company was started by John Rolfe and his son, Hiram Rolfe, in 1848. They produced binoculars for soldiers and civilians alike. In 1865, Hiram Rolfe donated a large quantity of binoculars to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These binoculars have since been used by many students and professors across the United States. In 1892, William Hildebrandt began manufacturingbinoculars in Laurinburg under the name “Hildebrandt & Son”. This company continued production until 1925. There were several other companies that produced binoculars before Hildebrandt& Son became known as the most popular supplier in America. The first commercially available digital photo viewer was invented by Nicholas-Jacques Conte in 1984. At that time, digital photography had not yet reached its stage where it could be considered an everyday tool like television or radio was at that point in history. Binoculous also enjoyed some popularity during this time as they were seen as being more affordable than traditional optical telescopes or cameras at that time (although still expensive compared to modern day optics).

Laurinburg, North Carolina is a small town located in Catawba County, North Carolina. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. Laurinburg is the home of The Laurinburg Foundation and The Laurinburg-Henderson Community College. The first settler in what is now Laurinburg was James Caldwell, who came to the area in 1802. In 1811, a Baptist church was built on the present site of the Harnett County Courthouse. A post office called Laurinburg was established in 1828, and remained in operation until 1840. In 1861, Confederate General Braxton Bragg decided to move his army from nearby Charlotte to near Laurinburg so he could cross over into North Carolina and attack Ulysses S. Grant’s Union forces at Missionary Ridge. As part of this plan, Bragg ordered his troops to burn down several homes in nearby Harnett County as part of their signal for the rest of his force to follow suit. This act set off a statewide response that resulted in over 100 arrests and damages amounting to $5,000USD (2010 dollars). By 1865, most of downtown Laurinborg had been destroyed by fire due to Confederate efforts to protect their supplies caches underground. After the Civil War ended, many African Americans fled South Carolina for fear that they would be forced into slavery if they returned home; however, some chose to stay and fight for the Confederacy under terms that allowed them amnesty from slavery if they surrendered their weapons and became “Democrats” (i.e., Loyalists). This group known as The White Citizens’ Council were responsible for lighting up several business districts with dynamite on New Year’s Day 1865 as a sign of defiance against Northern Reconstruction policies which sought à fairer treatment for black citizens living within white boundaries - an event which has been described as one of history's most incendiary nights ever experienced by humans.).

Laurinburg was founded in 1799 by Captain John Smith and his wife, Judith. The town was named for the Laurin River, which flows through the area. Laurinburg became a small community with about twenty-five residents in 1800. In 1825, the town incorporated and began to grow rapidly due to its location near the Catawba Mountains. By 1830, Laurinburg had a population of nearly one hundred residents. In 1834, Laurinburg became the capital of North Carolina after Raleigh was burned down by Confederate troops. The city continued to grow until it reached its peak in 1850 with a population of two thousand people. However, by 1860, Laurinburg had lost most of its growth and only had around fifty-five residents remaining. Laurinburg experienced significant economic decline during the late nineteenth century. This was due to several factors including decreases in mining activity and railroad development that started arriving in the town during this time period; as well as increased competition from other towns closer to major markets such as Raleigh and Chapel Hill. By World War I, Laurinburg had only thirty-six residents remaining and by 1920 it had only sixteen residents remaining. However, despite these setbacks, Laurinburg still experienced some success during its time as a small town. For example, in 1900–01, John Smith's son James renamed the local post office "Laurinburger" after his father's home state of Germany (he also served as mayor). Additionally, on May 9th 1903 (the same day that Andrew Johnson became president), Captain John Smith donated land at what is now downtown Laurinburg for use as an educational institution called "The Citadel." This institution would serve as a model for later universities across America and provide instruction in sciences and mathematics throughout much of North Carolina during this period.
Laurinburg was founded in 1792 by General James Robertson. The town was named for the Laurin River which ran through it. Laurinburg became a county seat in 1856 and was renamed Charlotte County in 1912.
