The Laurinburg area was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants who built log cabins and farming settlements in what is now Laurinburg Township in 1851. The name likely comes from Islay Lake, about north of the town. In 1872, a small post office was established here with the name "Laurinburgh." In 1876, Laurinburgh incorporated as a village; its first mayor was George W. Sayers. At that time it had a population of just 25 people. In 1902, Laurinburgh became an independent municipality and adopted a new constitution; its first mayor was Hosea Crouchman. In 1916, it annexed neighboring towns of Hickory and Garner to form the new city of Laurinburg; its first mayor was John Laddis (later elected governor). According to the 2000 census, Laurinburg has 2,865 residents; its total land area is 20 square miles (50 square kilometers). Of this total land area: 84% is forested; 10% consists of farmland or pastureland; 6% is developed as housing developments or other urban uses.; while 2% is water frontage on navigable waters such as Canoe Creek or Onslow River
