The first school in Knightdale opened in 1870; four years later, a church followed. In 1875, Knightdale became home to one of the first industrial parks in America when a group of businessmen bought 8 acres (3 ha) of forested land at what is now downtown Knightdale and erected a sawmill, gristmill, cotton gin, post office building and other commercial buildings. By 1900, most residents had moved away or been forced out by development projects around them; only a few remained until after World War II when growth slowed again and many people left for better opportunities elsewhere in the United States or abroad. Knightsdale experienced another period of rapid growth during World War II when many people came back to town after serving in military campaigns overseas; however, this time there wasn’t any major development due to war-related restrictions on building permits which limited new construction within city limits. After the war ended and postwar restrictions were lifted that allowed more civilian-owned businesses statewide to open up shop within city limits – including several small grocery stores – Knightsdale began experiencing periodic bursts of population growth that continued until about 1990 when it stabilized at around 2200 people annually. Since 2000 though there have been occasional surges (+4000+ people) due largely to newly formed suburban communities nearby like Gastonia or Rocky Mount which have attracted workers who commute into downtown Knightsdale for jobsites throughout day or night depending on prevailing weather conditions outside their neighborhoods (e.g., high winds/flooding). In recent years though some localized economic activity has begun emerging with some new businesses having started up such as localascahealthcare which provides health care services inside an old textile mill located just off Rte 460 next door known locally simply as “the mill” since there are no other dispensaries nearby that offer similar services not currently being offered by localascahealthcare despite their claim otherwise online via social media.) Today much like anywhere else there are whispers among locals about whether or not things might change soon with plans underway for an upcoming “mega mall” redevelopment slated for across town opposite courthouse square should new zoning changes be approved allowing more retail space along with housing developments potentially going up adjacent thereto.)

Knightdale was founded in 1892 by Enoch Pratt and his brother Cyrus H. Pratt as a small farming community on Yadkin River near what is now Cary, North Carolina. In 1911, the original town site Meridian Plantation was acquired by John Witherspoon Rockefeller from Burr Ridge Farms Company Limited for $5,000 (). In 1952-53, when Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Area became integrated into the larger United States structure following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 (), Knightdale lost much of its political power as it became part of Durham City Council District 3 which also included neighboring Cary and Chapel Hill . However it has regained some stature since then due to its diverse economy including light manufacturing operations such as window glass and door hangers; health care services including clinics operated by Baptist Health System; professional sports teams that have played their home games there such as the Knights Templar RFC (rugby) and NC State Wolfpack football (); retail emphasis includes numerous small businesses clustered around Main Street ; and an annual powwow or festival which takes place at Blackwater Park located adjacent to downtown on July 4th
