It was part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg metropolitan area before it became part of Durham. Knightdale has been a center for education and industry since its foundation by Quakers in 1792. The first school in Knightdale was built on land donated by Richard Foster (1724–1812), who also founded what is now Duke University. The town post office was established on November 10, 1792, and served the community until 1971. Knightdale's history begins with the purchase of 640 acres (2 km²) from Benjamin Hawkins in 1792. Hawkins had bought 100 acres (40 ha) in present-day Knightdale from James Caldwell for £10 per acre ($1 = $10). At that time, Forsyth County consisted of only two towns—Forsyth and Tryonville—and no other settlements larger than hamlets or farmhouses. The town's first residents were Quakers who had come to Charlotte to found a new religious denomination called "The Society for Propagating Christianity among the Inhabitants of these United Colonies" (SPCI). The society intended to establish schools throughout South Carolina and Georgia as well as create an agricultural society where communal farming would be replaced by individual enterprise. When they arrived in Charlotte, these pioneering settlers met with resistance from local African Americans who claimed that they owned all the land within their boundaries. However, over time this resistance dissipated and eventually the black community came to appreciate and befriend these white pioneers. In 1802, when Daniel Boone returned from his journey up North America and discovered that there were no Native American tribes living near his home state of Kentucky but instead several small groups of Seminole Indians living on Long Island Sound, he decided to make his way down South into Florida Territory – then under Spanish control – rather than risk being captured or killed by indigenous people he didn't know about. His group started out traveling through Georgia along the Appalachian Mountains before crossing over into North Carolina sometime after January 1st 1803 when Spain ceded Florida to America following its successful war against France three years earlier In 1807 King George II granted full citizenship unto all British subjects within America including those residing within limits defined as Forsyth County including Knightsdale Township which extended along I-64 just south of Chapel Hill until that highway went eastward into Durham; thus extending beyond what is now known as Forsyth County proper . After much debate between both Houses of Parliament concerning whether such recognition should be given solely unto Loyalists or Allottees/Freeborns & others enumerated therein , King George finally signified his acceptance of your application dated February 15th 1800 Begun at Kings Inn On High Street . Many early residents moved away during American Civil War due to skirmishes between Union Military Forces and Confederate sympathizers located nearby such as Moore's Creek Massacre which occurred less than a mile away from their homes on April 12th 1865 This left present day Knightdale with few permanent residents while other areas took on additional populations due to military activity or immigration during Reconstruction period following Civil War

In 1815, the town was renamed for General Nathaniel Greene, a key figure in the American Revolution. The town experienced significant growth during the nineteenth century, with a population of over 2,000 people in 1881. However, the Great Depression led to a decrease in population and businesses until the early 1970s when the town experienced a resurgence. As of 2018, Knightdale has an estimated population of approximately 730 residents.
