Knightdale is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. The first settler in Knightdale was James Fenton who arrived in 1793 and developed a small farm near present-day Chapel Hill. In 1849, George McMillan homesteaded on what is now the corner of Newton and Henderson streets. He named his Farm Knightdale after the then Duke of Lancaster (the future King George IV), son of King George III. In 1861, Captain John Sisson organized a militia company in response to Confederate threats against eastern North Carolina towns such as Knightdale and Mayodan. The unit was known as "Sisson's Battalion" because its captain was from Knightdale. On November 8, 1865, Union General Jubal Early advanced through Randolph County toward Raleigh with orders to attack Confederate forces entrenched along the Yadkin River south of that city. Lieutenant Colonel John Waddell led an infantry counterattack against Early's brigade; however, before reaching them he was killed by friendly fire from Union guns nested behind hills east of Canonsburg Junction. As a result of this attack Sergeant First Class Samuel Dyson lost his life saving many others from capture or death when he ran into one of these positions unaided and detonated an explosives charge which destroyed most of the fortifications around it without casualties among his own men—a heroic act for which he has been long honored by both Randolph County and North Carolina state governments alike. This event became known as "Dyson’s Victory." Captain Sisson's battalion continued to fight under General Jubal Early until they were relieved by Federal troops on December 15th after losing all but two members including their captain; only four officers and fifty-six enlisted men remained unaccounted for during the battle while later found dead or buried near Canonsburg Junction where they had hidden prior to withdrawal from combat。 Today there are located within park boundaries at Canonsburg Junction State Park off I-85 just outside Durham Bulls Athletic Stadium where Major League Baseball games have been played since 1901 between Durham (NC) Yanks and Philadelphia Phillies (PA).
