Knightdale is a small town in the U.S. state of North Carolina. The population was 1,836 at the 2010 census, up from 1,531 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Asheville-Cary Metropolitan Statistical Area. Knightdale is located on the east bank ofNC River and about 15 miles north of Raleigh on I-40. The community began as a small farming village named after Captain John Knight who fought in the American Revolution and died at age 36 in 1794 near what is now Knightdale. The original name for the area was "Henderson's Ferry" because Henderson owned land across from present day Knightdale on Henderson's Ferry Road. When NC Highway 11 was built through central Johnston County in 1921, Henderson's Ferry became NC Highway 11A and old NC Highway 11B became current US highway 10A (now US highway 8). The first post office opened in 1892 in what is now Knightdale and was called "Newbern". In 1902, it changed its name to "Knightdale". In 1909 it changed its name to "Adamsboro". In 1916 it changed its name to "Davison". Finally, in 1920 it changed its name to "Knightdale". In 1926, when NC highways were reorganized into their present form, Kings MountainRoad became CR 9 (now Old US highways 10A & 8) while Henderson's Ferry Road became CR 335 (now I-40). However, Henderson's FerryRoad still remains unsigned designation as there are several roads that bear this number including CR 335 which runs parallel to I-40 just west of town limits between Sanford and Chapel Hill before splitting off towards Eno where another road continues downriver concurrent with MR 9 until reaching Lumberton where it splits off again becoming CR 335 once again before ending at Sanford some distance inland from town limits near an access road which leads into town limits where you can find evidence of early settler life including pioneer fences and gravesites as well as a large brick sawmill built around 1830 by Samuel Pemberton Jr.. knightdaleseatscom

Fort Meade also played a significant role in North Carolina history during Reconstruction. When Reconstruction ended following America's Civil War, General Robert Ealey chose Knightdale as his headquarters because it was isolated from both Union forces stationed in other parts of North Carolina and Confederate forces located near Raleigh. Ealey used Fort Meade as a base to prosecute rounding up all black Americans living within 1 mile of any white person. As part of this effort, Ealey ordered local blacksmiths to forge cannons for Union forces and build hospitals for wounded soldiers. Today, Fort Meade is open to visitors all year round and provides an interesting perspective into North Carolina’s past. The fort has been Visitors Bureau property since 1945; however, portions of it have been open to the public since 1865 when it became known as “The Arsenal Museum” after its primary purpose became that of displaying artillery artifacts from across North Carolina including cannons dating back to 1685!
Knightdale was founded in 1795 by Captain John Knight and his brother Colonel James Knight. The first courthouse, built in 1800, is still standing. In 1872, the Knights granted deeds of land to a group of citizens who named themselves the "Knights of Columbus." The Knights donated most of their land to the town and it remains part of Knightdale today.
