The town was named for George Washington Knight, one of six children born to farming parents near Salisbury, North Carolina. George Washington Knight attended Davidson College before serving in the U.S. Senate from 1909 to 1913 as a Democrat representing Tennessee's 6th congressional district and then as U S Ambassador to Mexico from 1923 to 1927. He died suddenly while traveling in Europe in 1929 at age 43 after being hospitalized for appendicitis due to his high level of exposure to arsenic from his job with Texas Instruments Incorporated In 1853, Methodist missionaries founded Knightdale on a hill overlooking the Yadkin River as an agricultural research station where they could study different plants and soil conditions needed for various crops such as tobacco and cotton plantations Knightdale became an important transportation center during prohibition because it served as a dumping ground for all excess liquor produced by local businesses In 1955, when Alamance County became part of Wake County, much of what lay within its borders including Knightdale were annexed into Wake County while remaining part of Alamance County According to the 2000 US Census there were 3,905 people living in Knightdale proper (including unincorporated areas) making it both the most populous municipality within Alamance County AND also one of its fastest-growing communities since 1990 thanks in large part to expansion into new neighborhoods just east of downtown including Cherry Hill Estates & Huntersville Farms along with rural properties scattered throughout western Alamance & eastern Durham Counties In 2000-2001 there also existed 2 small rural villages located outside City limits: Wilder Hollow Village located northeastof Wheeler Rd/I-85 southcentral Durham county; White Sands Village located west central Wakefield county) which had no impact on population growth or economic development inside or outside City Limits despite claiming jurisdiction over portions of both municipalities

Knightdale is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,541 at the 2010 census. Knightdale is part of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro metropolitan area. The township was chartered on February 17, 1811 by Colonel John Baxley and his wife Elizabeth Harrison as Appomattox Township. On October 14, 1821, it changed its name to Knightdale after General Arthur A. Marshall who fought with George Washington during the Revolutionary War. The first post office opened in 1824 and remained open until 1953. On December 15, 1861, Confederate Major General Jubal Early attacked Union forces near Knightdale while they were skirmishing along Interstate 95 near Hillsborough Mills; some soldiers from nearby Lenoir City were also killed or wounded in this battle. After early victories at Missionary Ridge and Second Bull Run against superior Union troops under Ulysses S Grant these Confederate successes led to confidence among the northern soldiery that they could win any engagement if given enough time and support. However Northern states began to secede from the Confederacy soon afterwards; when North Carolina joined it on January 12, 1865General Johnston ordered all remaining eastern NC units to cross over into South Carolina without waiting for orders from Raleigh=North Carolina itself= so Johnston's army could be divided between Rebel and Union camps pending developments at Petersburg (Virginia). Knightdale quickly became an important stop on military supplies travelling southward along I-95 following General Johnston's successful crossing of the Potomac River into Virginia on April 9th 1865; however after days of siege operations by Confederate general Robert E Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Earthworks Park outside of townivaillerie Lieutenant Colonel William Cushing surrendered his force there on April 13th 1865 handing over 1/4 million rounds of artillery ammunition to Lee which he used against Sherman's Atlanta Campaign later that yearOperation Market Garden In 1922–1923 Knightdale donated land for what is now UNC Chapel Hill Stadiums football game fields; thus giving Chapel Hill their first ever home football program playing in one location since their original campus construction beginning in 1913). In 1963 Patton Field opened as the new home stadium for Duke University lacrosse players after being built using money raised by local businesses during a golf tournament benefiting local charities
