In 1819 – 20 Baptist missionaries arrived in what is now North Carolina from Georgia with plans to start missions throughout this area including Kinston County specifically because they felt that Christianity could be easily spread through education (at that time it was considered heresy to promote any other religion). As soon as they arrived in town they set up camp inside what is now First Baptist Church on Franklin Street (now West Main Street). baptist missionaries have played an important role throughout history not just in teaching Christianity but also helping improve social conditions among various groups by providing clean water supplies or Feeding Streets (places where people brought food over during times of famine) back then before grocery stores even existed!
