Kinston is a city in Chowan County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,846 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Kinston was established in 1794 by Englishman Revolutionary War veteran James Robertson and his wife Eliza. It became an incorporated town in 1868. The name "Kinston" comes from a Cherokee word meaning "place where buffalo grazed." The first white person to live in what is now Kinston was James Robertson, who came to the area in 1794 while serving with the British army during the Revolutionary War. He founded a small community on the banks of the Yadkin River near present day downtown Kinston. In 1868, Kinston became an incorporated town when it voted to become one of twelve counties within North Carolina. The original downtown core of present day Kinston consist of three blocks along Main Street between Elm and Market Streets; two blocks east of that on Broadway; and one block south of Tryon Street on Olduvai Road. Streets running north-south were built later as part of today's residential district: Broadwalk (now University Boulevard), Elm Street (now Pritchett Avenue), and Market Street (now Worth Avenue). At its peak,Kinston had a population of 25,000 people living in over 180 buildings across six blocks square. In recent years, many businesses have closed or relocated to other parts of North Carolina due to economic downturns or changes in state law affecting small towns such as Kinston. However, downtown has experienced some resurgence with new development including restaurants and cafes along Main Street as well as art galleries and music venues around Worth Avenue since 2013 when the city opened its first large-scale retail complex called Forbes Place which includes several anchor stores like Macy's Department Store and Sears locations across two levels with skybridges connecting each floor giving views into DowntownKinston from every store level throughout the mall complex

Additionally, KINSTON has long been home to several famous music venues including The Ritz Theatre and The Underground Lounge – both which have played host to some legendary performances over the years. Finally, despite its various accomplishments over the years – including becoming one ofthirty-six municipalities granted municipal rights by Governor George C. Wallace – Kinston still retains its humble roots; many residents continue to live near their families from childhood onwards. Kinston was founded in 1836 by John C. Kinston and his brother James. The town was named after General Nathaniel P. Butler, who had defeated Robert E. Lee at the Battle of Antietam in 1862. The town grew rapidly, and by 1852 it had a population of over 100 people. In 1865, Kinston became the capital of North Carolina when Raleigh was moved to the state from Davidson County. In 1881, Kinston merged with other towns in the area to form the City of Kinston.
