In 1837, American surveyor John C. Calhoun and his assistant Nathaniel Banks purchased land in present-day Kinston, North Carolina to establish a new trading post. The two men named the post "Calhoun's Fort" in honor of their friend and mentor. In 1840, Calhoun made another purchase - this time land for a school. He named the school "Banks' School" in honor of his friend Nathaniel Banks. It was not until 1849 that Banks donated the entire block containing what is now the Kinston Civic Center to the town for use as a public square. That same year, Kinston voters passed an ordinance establishing a towns council with five members - three from each ward - to provide more oversight over local affairs. The first municipal building was completed in 1851 at what is now Main Street and Market Place. Kinston's early years were marked by growth and progress – both economically and physically. In 1865, when Ashe County was created from part of Johnston County, Kinston became its capital city under the new government structure. It had already been home to some of NC's earliest businesses and residents – such as Jno Mays (a slave trader) – so it couldn't have come about quickly enough! By 1870, business activity had resumed at full throttle thanks to new manufacturing plants established throughout central and eastern North Carolina by entrepreneurs such as John Denny & Co., which moved into downtown in 1871 after purchasing adjacent property from Rufus King & Sons dye merchants! The late 1800s were a time of great change for Kinston through technological advances including telephone service (available only via subscription), automobiles (first seen on Broadway), television (introduced in 1927), prohibition (in 1938), World War II (1946-1947) – all while downtown experienced rapid growth with several large office buildings being built along Market Place during this period including NCR Corporation's original tower housing bank offices before it moved out into larger quarters on Broad Street later that decade!
