Kinston, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,829 at the 2010 census. It is the only city in Buncombe County and it lies on the eastern border of Asheville. It is bordered by Yadkinville to the north and east and Florence to the south. The first people to live in what is now Kinston were members of a Cherokee Nation tribe called the Nez Perce. In 1792, General James Lovett established a military post here with 10 troops as part of his attempt to force an Indian Treaty which would have allowed white settlement in this area. A group of men from Randolph County named themselves "The Kinston Rangers" in 1814 and began building a fortification along the road that leads into downtown from their farmstead on Elk Lake Road (now US-27). They also built three other forts over time: Fort Watauga (1815), Fort Bragg (1816), and Fort Union (1824). In 1847, when Johnston's army invaded Georgia during the Mexican–American War, he ordered his forces encampment near Kinston for safekeeping until his march west could be completed. The camp was located on today's Elm Street between Gates Mill Road and Rutherford Avenue just north of Interstate 40/US 27 exit 15A – proximity that has led some to erroneously think that Kinston was not actually founded until after Johnston's invasion; however, it actually date back to 1792! In 1865 Confederate General Braxton Bragg unsuccessfully attacked Union forces at Durham Station before retreating northeast across Pisgah Mountains towards Chattanooga; Kinston residents had quickly erected fences around their homes in anticipation of battle. In 1864 they voted 3-2 against secession because they did not want their county seceded but they ultimately backed Wade Hampton when he became Confederate secretary of war after Joseph Easley resigned from office following charges of bribery within the state legislature. However even though Sherman moved his army through eastern Tennessee during April 1865 without stopping at kinston,[10] most citizens remained peaceful throughout these events as much anger turned into fear as hostilities increased nearer home due to news articles emanating from Atlanta about skirmishes taking place between Federal armies occupying nearby counties.[11] By late 1865 most all civilian activity had stopped following Richmond's surrender at Appomattox Court House less than two weeks later;Kinston residents continued to reside within their homes since there was no way for them to travel outside except by horse or wagon ride back home
