Kinston is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. As of the 2010 census, the population was 26,474. The town has been an important center for banking and manufacturing since its establishment in 1827 as a small village on the banks of the river. It became a city in 1913 and remains one of America's most populous cities today. The area that now Kinston was first settled by Native Americans around 1765-1770 AD when they arrived from Virginia under Englishman James Moore and his party. In 1848, General Elijah White built Fort Hill about 3 miles north of modern day Kinston on high ground overlooking the river which served as his headquarters during American Civil War efforts to retake Tennessee from Confederate control. In 1850, Captain Samuel McGee established a ferry service across the river between Fort Hill and Kinston Landing for transportation goods and passengers upriver to Cumberland County for processing by white settlers there before reaching marketplaces in Raleigh or Charlotte back east. Kinston is a town in North Carolina, United States. The population was 10,876 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kinston County. The town was founded in 1837 and became a city in 1865. The Town of Kinston was founded by General James Hance on December 12, 1837 as part of the western part of what would become known as the Cherokee Nation. It was named for General Francis Marion who had defeated General British Colonel John Sevier at Coweta Creek on October 14th, 1836. On February 11th, 1838, the first council meeting of Kinston took place with thirty-six members present including six Cherokee leaders John Cobb and George Hawkins. The first law passed by the town Council was an ordinance to build a public school which cost $500 and opened February 17th, 1840. On May 1st,1841, kinston voted to become a city under the new charter which provided for one mayor and twenty-four councilmen with power to pass ordinances and make laws within limits prescribed by City Charter Establishment Committee In 1865, when Raleigh became the state capital following Reconstruction efforts led by Governor Zebulon Vance Booker III., Kinston became an important transportation hub because it had been selected as one of two cities (the other being Durham) where goods could be unloaded from railroad cars brought overland from Raleigh into downtown Richmond before being transported across NC state lines further downriver to Wilmington or Raleigh proper This process began in earnest during Reconstruction when Railroads were monopoly affairs controlled mostly by wealthy men seeking profits rather than serving general interests such as providing affordable transportation for citizens When Railroads came into competition with automobiles they quickly outgrew their original markets while simultaneously becoming more expensive to operate due in large part to mandates set forth by Congress through legislation called “Laws relative to Railroad Navigation” that regulated railroad rates , traffic patterns and constructions
