Kinston is a town in Bladen County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,577 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg–Wilmington metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1795 by Colonel James Kinston and others as a stop on the Great Northern Railroad. In 1824, it became the seat of government for Bladen County. The first post office opened in Kinston on October 15, 1825. In 1836, Kinston incorporated as a city under the name of "New Bern." New Bern was renamed to Kinston in 1861 when its original site was taken over by the city limits of Raleigh; Raleigh had previously been located in southwestern Johnston County and had no municipal borders with Bladen or Wake counties. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Easley's brigade traveled through Kinston to Camden Junction where he left his army for home after defeating Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Chickamauga Creek; this event helped spur development around Camden Junction including construction of what is now downtown Kinston. By 1865, most of what is now downtown was developed as part of what would become known as "the Gold Rush" due to gold discoveries along the banks of the Elizabeth River in that region during that period (see Gold Rush).
