A year later, James Biltmore married Elizabeth Knox who lived just south of Fort Copley along Rutherford Road (later called Asheboro Boulevard). At this time, Elizabeth Knox occupied much of what is now downtown Kinston with her home, shops and services such as blacksmithing and wagon making being conducted out front on Broad Street between Patton Avenue and Butts Avenue/King Street while Fort Copley functioned as barracks housing troops during peacetime while also hosting festivities such as picnics and ball games incidental to military campaigns both inside AND outside the fortifications! Elizabeth Knox even had her own rifle range which she utilized on occasion during peace or war trials!

In 1865 during Reconstruction following the American Civil War, Kinston became an important center for black political activity due to its close proximity to Union military camps outside town where many African Americans worked as soldiers or civilians under difficult conditions. The African American Business Men’s Association (ABA) was founded here in 1865 and still functions today as one of NC’s oldest business organizations committed to community service opportunities for all people through economic opportunity and education
