However, during the late 1960s and early 1970s economic decline led to decreases in jobs and population growth throughout much of eastern NC; however, due to new housing developments created downtown since then KinSTON has seen continued population growth (2009 estimate 7%±), although some suburban areas have experienced similar increases with no corresponding decrease in crime rates or poverty rates

Kinston is a town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 9,794 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Kinston was Elijah Hicks in 1792. Kinston's name comes from an early Cherokee chief named Kintoki and his people called it "Ki-n-tah-nini." In 1866, the Battle of Kinston occurred when Union forces led by General Robert E. Lee attacked Confederate forces under General Augustine Pickens. The battle resulted in a Confederate victory and Pickens became the new commander of Union troops in Durham County. The town was platted on November 5, 1868 by Jno Bickerton and James Hines with lots designed to be sold to farmers for $2 per acre (unimproved). On February 10, 1870, local attorney John Gorman filed for incorporation as a village with a population of twenty men and five women. He applied for incorporation because he wanted to promote education within the community and create agricultural opportunities for its citizens; he also claimed that Kinston would become "the commercial center of this section" as Raleigh developed northward into present day Durham County. In 1870-71, one prominent resident of Kinston was Wm Hargrave who served as postmaster and treasurer during that time period On October 1st 1870 inhabitants voted 2 to 1 to establish post office here which they did on December 6th 1870 under Mr Wm Hargrave Postmaster On July 15th 1872 Baptist minister Fenton Ingersoll preached at Methodist Episcopal Church on High Street about how God had sent him there from Tennessee specifically to preach salvation through faith alone without works so everyone could be saved including slaves . A large crowd responded which probably demonstrated some level of interest in what Ingersoll said because no action was taken until weeks later when another preacher by the name of Hill preached at First Presbyterian Church about how God had bought all sinned against out slave owners back into His service so they could live happy ever after like Abrahamic covenant knit together beforehand Mrs Cuthbert Reid officiated at this service which I am told demonstrates some degree or interest among Methodists in denominationalism maybe something growing back again? Anyway parishioners attended services every Sunday evening until 1880 when their pastor died suddenly leaving an open pulpit void So church services were conducted Tuesdays & Thursdays from then on until 1906 when Rev Rufus Webb took over
