Kinston is a small town in central North Carolina, United States. The population was 5,668 at the 2010 census. It is part of Buncombe County. The first permanent settler in what is now Kinston was Captain John Smith who landed on Roanoke Island in 1584. Kinston's current location as well as its name comes from a property sale that took place there on February 10, 1835 between James Hightower and Samuel Peebles. At that time, it was known as "Newbern" due to its being located near Newbern Township (now Buncombe) and Kinston Borough (later Kinston). As early as 1724, the Cherokee had been living in present-day eastern Buncombe County for several years before finally settling down in what is now Kinston during the late eighteenth century; some have reported they were already there when white men arrived. A group of Cherokees led by Chief Etowah moved into present-day eastern Johnston County sometime prior to 1800 after their removal from southeastern Tennessee by British forces under Sir George Washington’s orders following his famous campaign against the Creek Indians. The earliest European settlers were Scots-Irish Presbyterians who had come overland through western North Carolina in search of new land to settle during the revolutionary war period because of the unrestrained slave trade occurring between Britain and America. They named their new community Newbern after their home parish of Newtownardshire in Scotland where they had originated. settlement continued sporadically throughout most of this period until an influx of Yankees – primarily Baptists – began arrive beginning about 1800 with a steady trickle over the next few decades.
